- Establishes and maintains a results-oriented program of gift prospect qualification. Focuses on direct personal contact with donors and prospects through telephone calls, all types of correspondence, and personal visits (both on and off-site). This donor and potential donor engagement requires frequent national travel and working on evenings and weekends. This role is responsible for achieving both quantitative and programmatic goals each year.
- Manages specific objectives with particular attention to (a) the audience to be qualified, and (b) the number of personal contacts to be made both on-site and off, and (c) gift and pledge results.
Ensures assigned principal gift activity is focused on institutional priorities. Guides communications with educational leadership throughout the Foundation to ensure the quality, accuracy and timeliness of principal gift initiatives and proposals in assigned portfolio of donors.
Manages a portfolio of 100 - 200 principal, major, and planned giving prospects with a focus on prospect qualification, cultivation, solicitation, gift closure and stewardship.
Develops and implements strategies for the personal management of approximately 50 principal gift donors/prospects capable of support in the $1 million plus range. Maintains tracking of assigned prospects.
Makes recommendations for President's and Vice-President's solicitation priorities including gift solicitation strategies and recommended timing for proposals.
Assists in preparing development-related travel plans and/or on-site donor contact for senior leadership.
Increases principal prospect pool by regularly working with research staff to identify additional prospects.
Collaborates and partners with colleagues in Principal Gifts, Major Gifts, Planned Giving and the Annual Fund to identify, engage, invite, and steward donors.
Establishes and maintains productive working relations with donors, potential donors, and colleagues.
Solicits prospects through personal meetings, alone or with senior leadership, including senior volunteer leadership, and/or the professional staff in major gifts, planned giving, and corporate and foundation relations.
Develops strategies for and reports on substantive contacts with prospects. Creates next step strategies and maintains accurate and meaningful records of donor relationship status.
Prepares comprehensive short- and long-range plans, including plans for travel and proposals for strategic events, in pursuit of their annual goal. Plans will include a clear statement of objectives including timelines and follow-up activities.
Participates in and assists, as needed, in managing the annual meetings of the three special donor societies and the Goodwin Society.
Assists in identification and training of major gift fundraisers.
Overnight travel required. Evening and weekend obligations and assignments are routine.
Is easy to work with, does high quality work, and keeps their agreements.
- Successful candidate will have a high degree of interest in associating with a non-profit educational institution, especially with a focus on American history, appreciate the importance of philanthropy, have a strong understanding of the relationship fundraising process and how it supports the mission of Colonial Williamsburg, and be strongly motivated.
- Possess the ability to speak and write eloquently about the importance of Colonial Williamsburg's mission and programs.
- Must have an in-depth knowledge of the development process with special focus on principal gift fundraising techniques.
- Demonstrated success in fundraising including face-to-face solicitation of cash gifts.
- Be sensitive to the motivations of donors who support the Foundation
